The band themselves (non-English speakers) were apparently unaware of the gay slant that their lyrics had been given. In their later albums they were much more careful!

AC/DC
The Australian rock band disclaims any gay implications from their name and complained about their early bookings in gay clubs. However the cover of their "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" album features several unusual couples standing in front of a cheap motel (Black strips are over their eyes to conceal their identity). One of the couples is a pretty looking young man and a butch muscular guy in leather and chains.

Albita
Albita was a commissioned singer for the Cuban government but defected to Mexico. Moved to the US where she eventually made her way to Miami and the music clubs of Little Havana. Her stage presence, her deep, resonant voice, the percolating mambo rhythms of her music, her penchant for wearing "men's" suits, all helped make her a local sensation and attracted the enthusiasm of the famous, including Madonna.
Albita: "Valga El Brillo De Tus Ojos "
MC. "Dicen que..." (translated as "Rumour Has It")
USA. / Cuba. 1996.
Translated as "Rumour Has It", this will definitely start hips a' swivelling, and may start the press talking. Called 'The Latin k. d. lang'. Promoted as "The Diva of South Beach," she is Miami's hottest Cuban sensation, with a much commented-upon androgynous image of tailored suits and slicked-back hair, (somewhat reminiscent of Annie Lennox in her Eurythmics' days). Albita remarks that "by the second song of my performances, people aren't focusing on what I look like, but are listening to the music. " She adds: "I am definitely not the typical Latin woman. I'm blond and I'm thin and that's not a typical Latin look. I like to wear comfortable clothes when I perform. " She recognizes that "people need to find a reference point to express their impressions of me. "
In 1997 she femmed herself up, evoking a more glamorous image. No verification regarding sexual orientation.

Travis John Alford Band: "Lucky Pierre"
LP. "Lucky Pierre", Word Domination 0040,
USA. 1996. (GLOP) º
Travis John Alford died in December 1995 of complications due to AIDS. "Lucky Pierre" is the musical legacy he has graced us with.
Originally these 16-track demos were recorded during the last two years of Travis' life. These 10 tracks are songs Travis had been collecting for some years before his passing. A perfectionist (as any great artist must be), Travis had just landed a contract with Twist Management and was awaiting a chance at better production value to present these songs in, when his illness took a turn for the worse. As it became apparent that time was running out, friends convinced Travis to go into the studio to remix what was already there. The 10 tracks on "Lucky Pierre" are the fruits of his labor. The songs on "Lucky Pierre" range in scope from the pure pop ("Tumbleweed"; "Sweetie" and "Glory Hole" which could very well be the Pretenders meet John Rechy; all are full of sass and bump & grind while remaining un-apologetically sleazy. ) to un-apologetic anthems like "It may be evil but it's true", and "Make it Last". "The devil kings of Sodom" connotes Kenneth Anger's film Scorpio Rising. "We're in your cities and in your towns and I think I'll stay around" connotes Anger's images of gay bikers and rock and roll greasers bashing back. Things quiet down for the atmospheric "Warm Tonight" where love and dread of love lives on while we hear Genet's "Querelle" lone whistle down by the docks. There is the brash Dolls-ish "Lucky Pierre" where Travis created a mantra for the sexually insane that will hopefully live on way past all our years. Only Travis could have written lyrics like "Piston hipped Mother-fucker, right on!" and gotten away with it. Other insights such as "We committed a sex crime and we both got guns, an infamous crime against nature is happening here or so they say" or "Even though your leather is cliché, I like what it has to say anyway and your hair is so greasy, it's a great social lube" are pure rock and roll.
Travis goes on to comfort a troubled kid (himself?) in "Weep Below the Waist" who has been informed of his HIV status, "So they told you that you're dying, well don't take it so hard. " The final track, "Dry Heave Lover" is actually the last recording Travis made 2 months before his death.

Peter Allen (born Peter Woolnough, Australia , 1944-June 1991)
Peter Allen, popular cabaret pianist and songwriter began performing with Chris Bell as The Allen Brothers (his cohorts were rumored to be his lovers). He became a protégé of Judy Garland, opening her shows until Peter got engaged to Liza Minelli. At the end of his 3-year marriage in 1967 the group split and Allen moved on to a solo career. His career as cabaret artist and singer-songwriter brought him popularity on TV as well as a wide association with show ballads, several of which seem to contain wry comments on sexuality. He joked during Broadway concerts "Yes, I'm bilingual".
He wrote "Don't Cry Out Loud"," (I Go To) Rio", music for the film "Arthur", and "I Honestly Love You" which was a hit for Olivia Newton-John", also wrote and starred in a Broadway Musical, "Legs Diamonds". Allen died of AIDS related illness in 1992.
In 1998 Allen's life was used in the biographical musical "The Boy From Oz" (see below)

With subject matter somehow outdoing both the performances and recording quality in terms of crudeness (no mean feat), "Freaks, Faggots, Drunks and Junkies" may be the definitive G. G. Allin album, if for no other reason than that it marks the first appearance of many Allin songs that have since been endlessly repackaged on compilations and live recordings. Allin jumps unpredictably from discussions of drugs, violence, and excretory functions to sexual fetishes ranging from the simply degrading to rape, pedophilia, and "anti social masturbation" (sic). Most intentionally shocking stuff like this comes off as forced and stupid, but the defective Allin's obvious instability renders it unforced and stupid. Tunes like "Die When You Die," "Last In Line for the Gang Bang," "Young Little Meat," "Suck My Ass It Smells," and signature song "Outlaw Scumfuc" are enough to shake anyone's faith in humanity down to its very foundations. Allin's entire output ranks as perhaps the worst music ever recorded; this is its clearest expression.

Marc Almond (née Peter Almond)
Marc Almond first came to public notice in the group Soft Cell (with David Ball) in 1981 ("Tainted Love" reached No. 1 in the UK. August '81). After the group split in 1983, and a brief project with Marc and the Mambas (see below), he started a solo career with only moderate success, though gaining some cult' following and scoring a hit in duet with Bronski Beat ("I Feel Love"-see below).
Inspired by Lou Reed, Alice Cooper, Marc Bolan and the New York Dolls, he spent his first five years in pop ducking media questions about his homosexuality before coming out in 1986.
Much of his solo material shows a gay sensibility and there have been several homo-erotic references in the pop videos which accompany them. In the late eighties he became associated with mournful retrospective ballads. hearkening back to the days of cabaret singers, updating it with that sound for dance clubs of the '80s.
The main themes of his work were established early on. Before he properly started a solo career, Marc Almond formed Marc and the Mambas, a loose congregation that featured Matt Johnson of The The and Annie Hogan. "Untitled" (1983), the group's first album, featured covers of Lou Reed, Syd Barrett, and Jacques Brel, the Belgian songwriter who he emulated throughout his career. Almond went on to cover many of the Brel songs, which he had learned from the records of Scott Walker. Almond added a self-conscious element of camp with his Euro-disco and occasionally sleazy lyrics. "Torment and Toreros" (1983), Marc and the Mambas' second album, explored this path in more detail than "Untitled," only to an orchestral background. After its release, the group broke up.
In 1984 he released a (posthumous) Soft Cell album, "Last Night in Sodom", and then another in 1994, "Down In The Subway".

Almond began to hit his stride with this album, which fulfilled most of his campy cabaret fantasies. "Stories of Johnny", released the following year, was more cohesive, spawning a British hit with the title song. Even though he maintained a cult following in England and various parts of Europe, his records were not being released in the U. S.

"Strange Fruit". GLAMA '97 winner; "Soon I Will Be Done", a tribute to Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, and Audre Lorde, stirs the listener with its rhythms and rich layering of voices. The haunting "Strange Fruit" first performed by Billie Holiday, is presented a cappella. Todor Todorka features two solitary women moving towards each other, sung in the undulating Balkan style (where one's voice must be heard from mountain to mountain).
'Dedication to the pursuit of choral excellence within an atmosphere that celebrates all forms of women's devotion to women' is how Amasong's founding director defines the mission of this 50-woman Lesbian Feminist chorus from Illinois. Sung in 11 different languages, the songs on this collection focus on the traditions, life experiences, and history of women -- ranging from ancient to contemporary, from the spiritual to the political, but always powerful.

This stomping dance number finds Ms. Amos affecting a macho swagger as she challenges a potential male suitor away from her girl: "Everybody knows I'm her friend... everybody knows I'm her man... if you want to get with her... boy, you better make her raspberry swirl!"
This track finds Tori at her raucous best, diving full force into her new persona as club diva. It's a move away from her more traditional style of piano ballad & metaphorical lyrics, replacing them with a thumping rock beat.

This laugh-a-minute album is a collection of new and previously recorded songs from one of the great troubadours of lesbian and gay culture. Includes "I'm Sorry" ("that you're straight...Where do I send the card?"), "Wynona, Why Not?" a love song to guess who?), "Love Song" (a hilarious send-up of every bad pop love song ever written), and of course "Bad Hair Day", plus 6 more fun-filled romps. Jamie's warped sense of the weird and the ridiculous really shines through on this album.

"The arrival of the new breed of androgynous pop women (k. d. lang, Tracy Chapman, Michelle Shocked, Phranc, Indigo Girls) propelled in large part by an increasingly self-conscious lesbian audience, signals the fact that women can now defy conventions of femininity in popular music and still achieve mainstream success. Their multicultural repertoire seeks to reflect the rich diversity of human lives and struggles, especially those of women, with songs which are empowering, challenging, and fun. Anon:(uncredited) "I'll Make Him Mine"
One of the most popularly swapped tapes amongst gay music collectors. These tracks are thought to be demos. The (British?, male) songwriter sings them himself although he songs are clearly intended for 60's girl groups. (probably c. 1963). JD. Doyle did a search at the Library Of Congress Copyright Section on this song and found nothing, supporting the assumption that the tracks never made it onto vinyl?!. Some copies quote on the track list that "Golden Wonder Boy" was from Mills Music, and "I'll Make You Mine" was from Regent Sound Ltd.

Joan Armatrading (St Kitts, 1950 - )
A dramatically new style of vocal by a vocalist who worked hard for her overnight success with "Love and Affection" which reached no. 10. in the UK in 1976, and was widely acclaimed. She enjoyed a number of radio play- and chart hits in the coming months and since then has remained popular with critics, as with women's/ lesbian audiences although her mainstream following died off in the early eighties. Her work is typified by soft ballads with a strong rhythm and J. A's distinctive vocal styling.

Bev Stanton of Washington D. C. is a one-woman techno band known as Arthur Loves Plastic. The band name comes from her cat, Arthur, who enjoys playing with plastic grocery bags. Stanton takes the low-budget approach to making music, but despite that approach, she's put out some five-star music.
The song "Salomé" is an inspired synth-dance track with lyrics that poke holes in the morality balloon of conservative types, while revelling in sexuality and imploring the listener to "dance...cast the spirits out...come back to the living!" This song has 100% club anthem potential. Another track, "Heil Mary," takes a more industrial bent playing on Catholic quilt with the sample "Hail Mary, Full Of Grace" and a voice seemingly wailing "It's all our fault!"
The sexuality theme comes full force both in "Out!" (COMI), and "This Rhythm Is Mine" where Moscatiello sings "Some people keep it hidden, some people think its a sin...I'll go knock that door down...so they'll let me in." Also "Goodbye"; "Obey Me"; "Parental Discretion"; "Hold Me "; "Rain"; "Give Me Hope"; "No Nations, No People"; "Eileen-a-roon"
"850" with breathy female vocals singing "I try to think straight...but my thought always stray. "

Kevin Aviance
Kevin Aviance is a drag performer who has already had two club hits with the tracks "Cunty" and "Din Da Da" (which topped Billboard's Club Play Chart). A completely over-the-top artist who has been compared to Grace Jones, although folks with a sense of dance music history know that he's actually borrowing heavily from the late-'80s work of house music legend Jamie Principle.
