In the 1930's Leerdam began to experiment with a new technique which used small grains of glass and a pressing machine. The first results were called Graniver and the process was used to manufacture opaque pots and bowls.
In total the factory produced seven graniver products in a range of sizes and colours sometimes with stands or liners. The process was cheap and innovative but also brought some inherent problems. The bowls and dishes made in this technique are very vulnerable to chips and hairline cracks. The colour of the glass grains is often not thoroughly mixed, which leads to a marbled effect or other patches of darker colour.
This small group of objects has become a fiercely competitive area of collecting. More expensive than the pots and bowls, are the black stands on which they were intended to stand. Not only are the stands very susceptible to damage, but they were sold as a separate item, and many buyers decided to buy a pot without a stand.
The recent rapid price rises in the market imply that prices will need to be updated regularly. Prices are based on Good/Very Good condition (no chips and only minor hairline fractures/colour imperfections). The high premiums paid for A1-Perfect examples makes it hard to establish maximum prices.
