Sunday 25th January saw the opening of a new exhibition about glass from de Rupel, Boom. This third exhibition is the first to take place outside the factory's home town. In the Belgian town of Lommel which provided the sand which was the raw material for the factory, you will find the newly opened 'Glass House; (Het Glazenhuis) which is the home for this special event. Alfons Vandervaeren, one of the authors of the book 'Boom's Glass', gave a lecture about the factory during the opening ceremonies, and is one of the collectors who have provided their best examples for this exhibition. As well as a good selection of Artver vases by Paul Heller, there are examples from a wide range of Boom designs and an archive exhibit showing film of the factory at work. In this specialist display space there are hundreds of objects to admire, all beautifully lit and set off by a wonderful new building featuring a glass spire at its centre. The photos in our preview are just a small sample of the wonderful displays. This substantial exhibition is the first to feature antique/period glass, previous exhibitions having looked at modern art glass and inviting innovative glassblowers to work at the on-site workshop. The exhibition space, easily located near the centre of town, is open six days a week until April 26th. and entrance is only 3 euros. |
